Primary sources: Raw data, maps and photographs along with definitive information regarding how they were gathered.
Secondary sources: The analysis of raw data by experts. Bulletins issued regarding the status of a volcano, its hazard level, peer reviewed papers, graduate theses etc. would be secondary information.
Tertiary sources: Textbook type material drawing general conclusions from a series of events. Commentary in the media and student reports and essays.
Anecdotal sources: "eye witness" accounts of events; some media interviews; native legends.
The belief in the existence of the lost world of Atlantis is based on the anecdotal information of old myths and legends. In spite of the hysteria and that can surround anecdotal information, it can supply important clues to real events and should not be discounted out of hand. It must always be approached with caution.
